Upcoming issue, The Shining opera, etc.
your sporadic tiny frights update
The table of contents for the Walpurgis 2023 issue of tiny frights is taking shape, and I’m excited! There’s still time to submit your spooky little art, poetry, micro-fictions — the deadline is March 31st, up until midnight US Central time. See the submission guidelines here.
Your humble editor went to see the Kansas City premiere of the operatic adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining. I might write a full review for the zine, but key points:
The best performance was by the young actor playing Danny Torrance. I didn’t save the program notes, but I believe his name is Tristan something, and if I recall correctly, he (the actor) is a descendant of the man who built the hotel that inspired The Overlook.
The first half of the opera is better than the second half.
It’s not clear that the story gains much from this treatment. A great opera could probably be based on The Shining, but this adaptation, while enjoyable enough (and closer to the book than the movie is), isn’t it. I won’t be buying the CD.
